The Mysterious Theft of La Señora

On a grey morning of Monday, in London, Sherlock Holmes and I were discussing about the last mystery he has solved. It was about the murderer of an important madam of the society, who Holmes found out to be a madam without the silver spoon in her mouth which she professed to have during all her life, and that she was killed by her niece, hoping to receive a fortune that didn’t exist. To be honest, I was so tired of helping my friend in solving the cases, that I just wanted to get a good rest for my mind.

That way, I finished my discussion with Holmes, wrote the last notes about the case and let my notebook inside the drawer of the desk to write the full story later. Mrs Hudson left a full teapot on the coffee table, two teacups, sugar lumps and also the morning newspaper. I served myself of this delicious beverage and sat comfortably at the armchair to read the news of the day. Meanwhile, Sherlock was finishing to write a thesis about tracks analysis over varied types of land.

As usual, the newspaper brought news about many calamities, coups, thefts, deaths and all sort of crimes. There was also all kinds of gossips and slanders against public figures, especially government members. I avoided reading it loud so my friend wouldn’t get interested by any case and decided to involve himself. I was stuck in my reading when a little note in the culture and entertainment section caught my attention. After getting to know the information, I decided to share it with my partner:

“Look, Sherlock, the London museum is inaugurating today one new sample on their gallery of Galician art. There will be, moreover, the exhibit of the priceless work La Señora, from the famous painter Juan de Carranza! It’s such a unique work, that I have no idea how they were able to bring it here. We need to take the chance and go to this exhibition, actually it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” I said, excited.

“And why do you judge that this event is of my interest?” Holmes asked without stopping writing his thesis.

“I believe it would be good to give our eyes the pleasure of such beautiful works, handmade by one of the most talented artists from Europe. Wouldn’t be any harm, to you, to acquire a bit more of arts knowledge,” I poked the detective, hitting one of his weak spots.

“Well, Watson, of what avail would be to know about pieces of canvases filled with strikes of pencils, or even lumps of mud in the shape of people, animals or other unknown things?” Holmes disdained.

“Let your mind rest a bit, mate! Get up from this chair, come with me to an outing to appreciate the beautiful things of life. Furthermore, many interesting people will be there. Some human contact will do very well to you.”

“But, Watson...”

I got up and, abruptly, I yanked the feather from the hand of my eccentric partner.
